Starting from today, Bulgaria takes over the EU presidency

-

Starting from today, Bulgaria will preside over the council of the European Union i.e. it will officially preside with the EU to which it joined in 2007 along with Romania.

“This country will seek a balance between the countries-members’ specific priorities and EU’s strategic priorities for accomplishing real, tangible results in an active dialogue with the citizens regarding the European issues and will provide answers to their demands about greater security, employment, sustainable growth and a stronger presence of the EU on the international scene. When we are talking about United Europe, we must not forget that the Western Balkans has a need for clear European perspective and connectedness between the and the country members” states the official site about the Bulgarian presidency of the EU

Bulgaria will preside with the Union until the 30th of June when it will hand over the presidency to Austria.

Bulgaria has received criticism from the EU for the imbalances in the economic and social issues including a high level of corruption.

Zoran Zaev’s new government has invested a maximum effort for improving the relations with Bulgaria and his first visit as a Prime MInster was in Sofia, for a meeting with the Bulgarian Prime Minister Bojko Borisov, who even then announced a strong support for Macedonia.

That was realized through the signing of the Agreement for friendship, good neighborly relations, and cooperation on the 1st of August in Skopje.
