Parliament adopts Law on Languages, and votes Kadriu and Kostadinovski as Constitutional judges

Today, MPs adopted the Law on the Use of Languages and elected Professor Dr. Osman Kadriu and Dr. Darko Kostadinovski as the new judges in the Constitutional Court on the proposal of the President of the State.

With 69 votes “for”, without abstentions and no votes “against”, MPs adopted the bill on the use of languages. According to the Badinter majority, 27 MPs from non-majority communities voted “for”, while one MP abstained.

With 68 votes “for”, MPs chose Professor Dr. Osman Kadriu as a new constitutional judge. According to the Badinter principle regarding the majority of 26 MPs from 32 MPs, belonging to non-majority communities voted for him.

After the vote, Kadriu and Kostadinovski will make a ceremonious declaration after which they will be officially proclaimed constitutional judges with a nine-year mandate.

They come in the place of judges, such as, Natasha Gaber Damjanovska and Gzime Starova, whose mandate ended in October, this year. They were appointed Constitutional judges on the proposal of President Branko Crvenkovski in 2008.

The MPs, with 68 votes in favour, also voted for the termination of the Council for establishing facts and initiating a procedure for determining the responsibility for a judge, followed by a fast track procedure.
