Osmani: Negotiations with the EU will be difficult, long-lasting and expensive

-

Today at a press conference in Government, Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs, Bujar Osmani and Special Adviser to the President of the Government for Euro-Atlantic Integration, Bojan Maricic presented the negotiating structure for Macedonia’s accession to the European Union, which they said was a process that will be difficult, long-lasting, expensive and where there will be very difficult political decisions.

Osmani said that the basic function of the negotiation process is the country’s preparation for membership and the transformation should result in the creation of a European society.

“State and public institutions will be the locomotive of this process and Parliament, the judiciary, the opposition, the civil society and all other stakeholders will have to be involved”, said Maricic.

Deputy Prime Minister Osmani explained that by October, the Secretariat for European Affairs (SEA) will map out the institutions, groups of interests, as well as specific names that will contribute to this process.

“This will be a complex operation and very expensive. Calculations are being made how much it will all cost, the finance ministry needs to adjust to the needs of this process. The government will finance this process from the state budget because it is one of the most important strategic goals of the state, and financial assistance will be provided by the EU through IPA funds as the budget is not sufficient to cover this intensive agenda”, explained Osmani.

Maricic says hundreds of people will be involved in the process and that by the end of it thousands of people will be involved.
