High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security of the EU, Federica Mogherini, the day before the crucial EU ministers’ meeting when the recommendation to start negotiations with Macedonia should be considered, again she urged member states to reward Macedonia’s progress.
“You know that we recommended opening negotiations with Skopje and Tirane, this process must be based on merit, which means that when there is progress, it must be recognized and be encouraged and supported. I hope that the member states will make the right decision”, Mogherini said.
She said that “the progress is impressive” in the Western Balkan, stating the signing of the name dispute with Greece, as well as the progress in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
Tomorrow, EU foreign ministers with the Council for General Affairs should discuss concerning the enlargement and the April reports of the European Commission for the Western Balkans. The final decision regarding negotiations with Macedonia could still be postponed unless tomorrow ministers reach agreement.
