Today, Constitutional judges will elect a new president of the Constitutional Court at 11:00am at the Faculty, “Meta” has learned from sources within the Constitutional Court.
The current president, Elena Gosheva’s mandate expires on November 1,which is in two weeks.
Our sources say the Faculty for electing a new president was scheduled for today because, without a new president, the work of the Constitutional Court would be blocked.
According to our information, the most serious candidate for the presidential chair is Judge Nikola Ivanovski, who Gosheva has reportedly endorsed.
The new president, from his predecessor will succeed the hot topic regarding the initiative for assessing the constitutionality and legality of the Law on the Special Public Prosecutor’s Office (SPO), which has already been sitting in a draw for a year now, and has not yet found itself on the agenda, despite numerous calls from the opposition and various NGOs.
The current president, whose mandate expires on November 1,was elected as a member of the Constitutional Court in May 2012. A month later, the Constitutional Court elected Nikola Ivanovski as a Constitutional judge.
Otherwise, in a several months, Constitutional Judges Natasha Gaber-Damjanovski, Gzime Starova, and Ismail Darlishta mandates also expire after a nine-year term. They were elected to the Constitutional Court in 2008.
According to the Constitution, Parliament elects the judges of the Constitutional Court by a majority vote by all the MPs. A judge’s mandate lasts nine years without the right to a re-election. The Constitutional Court elects a president from their own ranks for a term of three years, again, without the right to a re-election. Judges of the Constitutional Court are elected from the most prominent lawyers in the country.
