MES relented: Mathematics won’t be obligatory on state graduation

-

Mathematics won’t be obligatory in passing state graduation for all students in secondary schools, but only for students who are enrolled in gymnasium and who selected natural and mathematical sciences at the end of the second or beginning of the third year of secondary education. This was agreed today between Union of high school students and the Ministry of Education and Science.
“After a lengthy debate, consensus was reached mathematics not to be obligatory for all students in secondary schools, but only for students who are enrolled in gymnasium and who selected natural and mathematical sciences at the end of the second or beginning of the third year of secondary education. For gymnasium students who have chosen social and humanist sciences, as well as all students of secondary specialized schools, mathematics will be subject to a choice, along with the foreign language, i.e. will be taken if the student chooses in accordance with personal faith, belief and affinities. For gymnasium students who have selected languages and art, mandatory subjects will be native and foreign language,” say representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science.
On the meeting was also reached an agreement, under which the Ministry of Education and Science in the next period will submit a letter to all universities in the field of technical sciences, which will recommend candidates who selected and passed mathematics on the state graduation to have priority during enrollment.
