Ivanov: The name issue is too serious to be resolved with a telephone conversation

-

The President’s Cabinet, Gjorge Ivanov, assessed yesterday’s statement from Prime Minister Zoran Zaev’s, on the TV program “Top Tema”, that possible rejection of the agreement with Greece would jeopardize Macedonia’s EU and NATO prospects and would increase internal dangers, is a “desperate attempt to manipulate the public and influence the Macedonian citizens before a possible referendum affirmation.”

“Macedonia’s strategic commitments for membership to the European Union and NATO are clearly defined and unchanged. Preserving the constitutional name and finding a solution that will not cause constitutional changes is in no way directed against the integration of Macedonia into the European Union and NATO. Coming to an international agreement contained in one or more interlinked documents should be in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia, and not foresee any amendments”, the cabinet stated.

Regarding Prime Minister Zaev’s appeal to support the possible agreement by all political parties, President Ivanov once again indicates that a broad national consensus is needed for finding a solution that will not violate the dignity of the Macedonian people and citizens.

“President Ivanov believes that the name issue is too serious, its name is an extremely important issue for the citizens of Macedonia, and needed specific requirements, to be solved by telephone and through a personal agreement between the prime ministers of both countries”, the statement also said.
