Ivanov: Macedonia will take all measures to protect it’s state borders and national security

-

Macedonia is neither a member of the European Union nor NATO, nor is it part of the Schengen area and can not bear the consequences of the policy of the European Union, said President Gjorge Ivanov after meeting with the National Security Council convened in a wider composition, after approximately 1,500 refugees illegally entered Macedonia from Greece.

“Last night there was an incident on our southern border. An uncontrolled number of migrants and foreign nationals from the European Economic Area and the Schengen zone tried to illegally cross the state border outside the official border crossing and enter the area which has been declared a crisis area. Our security forces successfully responded. I applaud their timely and responsible reaction, without the use of force”, said the President.

Ivanov said that the authorities of the countries on the Balkan route must not remain passive observers to such incidents. He said that we should discontinue the practice of carrying refugees to the border and setting up camps in these parts of the border.

At the meeting, members of the Security Council and the leaders and representatives of the four political parties were also informed of all other security risks and threats the country faces.
