“I am really disappointed by recent events. We have invested a lot in the Agreement from June to July last year to bring the country back on the Euro-Atlantic path. Many of the deadlines were not respected, but finally they were met. And now, the fact of the matter is that now elections on June 5 is a difficult situation, honestly, I do not know what it will look like after the elections. I think the only thing I can do is again, to call on the parties, and civil society organizations, but especially political parties, to return to the negotiating table and to remain committed to the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the country, ” stated EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, in his address at the institute” Brookings’ in Washington, while answering a question from the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD).
The Commissioner said that if the parties do not work together and stay focused on fair elections, the new government will not be internationally accepted or recognized.
Hahn added that along with MEPs, they will attempt to make another effort to mediate.
“I can not promise anything, but I hope that gradually the people of the region and some other parts will understand that democracy means to reach an agreement and compromise, and not to have the attitude of a winner or loser. Otherwise, you’ll never be successful. People in the region deserve a better future, and this is only possible if you have a clear European perspective. This includes European or a democratic conception of the rule of law. This, I think, was already the extensive response to pardon people by the President from his side”, said Hahn.
