“Freedom House”: Macedonia sinking down the scale in Democratic Governance

The American organization ‘Freedom House’ which monitors the state of democracy throughout the world, including political freedoms and human rights, has, in its Democratic Governance report for 2016 has given Macedonia a 4.29 result, which is the worst result the country has had in the past 10 years. (The scale of Freedom House ranges from a score of 1 to 7, where 1 is the best rating through to 7 which is the worst rating).

The report, which refers to the whole of 2015 is a review of developments of the last year, the publication of the “Putsch” affair along with the publication of the intercepted calls from the political opposition party, the start of the political crisis, developments in Divo Naselje on May 9th and 10th, and the obstruction of the Przino Agreement and the activities for its implementation.

“Democratic governance continued to deteriorate in 2015, in which the country has experienced its worst political crisis since 2001. The overstepping of powers by the ruling parties led to massive corruption scandals and electoral fraud” the report stated.

According to the report, there has been  setbacks in all areas analysed by ” Freedom House”. The only progress recorded were ratings in the civil society category.
