Dimitrov: The Parliament should heed the will of the people

-

The Parliament should decide whether it will heed the will of the people, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Dimitrov at today’s debate “Bilateral in the Balkans: Regional Implications of Bilateral Disputes” organized as part of the Forum for civil society Skopje 2018.

-The referendum turnout was close to 37% and even though we have an ELection Code that predicts a census, still, 609 thousands of citizens have said “Yes.” That is the majority and they want Macedonia to go forward. WHat follows are talks at the Parliament. We are faced with a historic decision. Our reality is that we cannot avoid the name dispute on our way to NATO and EU. The Parliament should decide whether it will heed the will of the people. This is the key. If we want to move forward, then we should use this key – said Dimitrov.

According to him, the only time when more citizens have voted “Yes” at some elections were those in 1994 when Kiro Gligorov was elected as president of the state.

Among other issues, Dimitrov stressed that the snap parliamentary elections are the last option.
