AJM: Commission continually emphasizes non- transparent Government advertising

-

Brussels clearly and unambiguously said that media freedom in Macedonia regressing, that there is violence against journalists, the Government directly and indirectly interfere in the editorial policy of the media through opaque advertising , said the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), in response to the European Commission’s progress report.

– In the report the Commission pays appropriate attention to all forms of violence and intimidation of journalists, such as death threats, physical attacks and destruction of property of journalists. There is a physical attack on journalist by a government official noted in the report, stating that the attack was condemned by the government. The Commission highlights the wire-tapping scandal where journalists for years have been illegally monitored and wire-tapped”, said Naser Selmani, the President of the AJM.

From the AJM they believe it is good that in these reports the Commission continuously highlight the issue of non-transparent Government advertising, which has a major impact on the media market, directing government advertising to pro-government media to influence the reporting.

“We believe that the report will affect the Macedonian government,, and to take seriously the warnings from Brussels and sincerely commit to solving problems with the media, and we as the AJM are ready to help with concrete solutions to overcome all challenges”, added Mr Selmani.
