This summer (2016), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher used the information he received directly from the Russian government to promote one of President Vladimir Putin’s top priorities: removing the name of the Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky from a global anti-corruption law.
This is the intro of the article titled “Putin’s Favourite Congressman” published by the American internet magazine “Politico” on the 23rd of November 2016, two weeks after Donald Trump was elected as president of the USA.
Apparently, more independent investigations are blaming Russian authorities for the death of Magnitsky who died in prison after he revealed evidence of the theft of around 230 millions of dollars by officials close to Putin’s regime. In 2012, The Congress banned their entrance into the USA and the use of the country’s banking system to officials that were allegedly connected to the murder of Magnitsky. Last year, American lawmakers, wrote Politico, wanted to expand the anticorruption act to hold officials in other countries accountable for human-rights atrocities.
In the article, Politico claims that Russian authorities through Rohrabacher have tried to lobby for the US Congress to back off the expanded act with the Magnitsky’s name of it. Further, in the text, the similarities in the Tramp’s and Rohrabacher’s opinions are stated especially that they both try to improve the relations with Russia.
Congressman Rohrabacher, who also is the chairman of the House subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia at the moment is talked about in Macedonia after his statements in the interview given for the Albanian broadcasting station “Vizion Plus” that “Macedonia is not a state”, that “Kosovars and Albanians in Macedonia should become a part of Kosovo” and “the other part of Macedonia should become a part of Bulgaria or any other country they think it belongs to.”
His statements have caused fiery reactions in the country and the Macedonian Ministry of foreign affairs demanded a response by the US Department of State regarding the congressman’s statement.
